Custom
Millwork
Lattasburg LumberWorks machines several semi loads
of Kiln Dried (KD) Hardwood lumber each week (pictured
on left). The custom millwork and moulding
products are machined to the very precise specifications
of +/- (5) thousands of an inch.
The process starts with bringing the kiln
dried lumber to the 2-sided planer (pictured
on left). The top and bottom surface of the
boards are skim planed (or hit or miss surfaced)
to create a reference plane.
The surfaced lumber is width sawed into moulding
blanks. Several different widths are ripped from
the boards to increase the yield. These moulder
blanks are sawed 3/16" larger than
the finished product.
The tooling is carefully ground using a profile
knife grinder (pictured on the left).
Custom templates are made with a CNC template maker
to match either a wood sample or a drawing. The
knife grinder operator takes radial measurements
of the ground cutter heads. These measurements are
transferred to the moulding machine to reduce the
set up time.
The moulder man locks the moulding heads onto the
moulder and adjusts the machine to produce the finished
stock (pictured on the left). A test piece
of poplar stock is used to set the moulder before
the blanks are machined. The product may be sanded
on one or both sides before being packaged for shipment.
Many of the custom
mouldings shown in the profile section are kept
in inventory. Red Oak, Cherry, Poplar, Soft maple,
Quarter sawn White Oak, Hickory, Walnut and White
Elm are species commonly machined.
The final product is delivered to wholesale
wood customers such as furniture
makers, cabinet makers, picture frame manufacturers
and hardwood flooring installers
(pictured on the left). Many of the standard
profiles are stocked in Red oak, Cherry, Poplar,
Brown Maple, Quarter sawn White oak and White Elm.
Lattasburg Lumberworks can grind custom
tooling to match your wood sample or drawing.
The machined custom millwork and moldings are delivered
locally on Lattasburg LumberWork's straight truck
to general contractors, home builders, wholesale
woodshops, furniture makers, cabinet shops, hardwood
flooring installers and picture frame manufacturers.
